The earthquake caused severe damage to already overwhelmed water sources in Haiti. Safe drinking water is an urgent need for displaced families living in temporary shelters and camps. ARI is preparing for the large-scale drilling of 50 wells/boreholes and installation of treadle pumps in and around Port-au-Prince. We will provide wells to camps, schools and health facilities.
Currently water is supplied by others, by trucks to camps and health facilities, at the high cost of $100 per 2,500 gallons. The treadle pumps can easily produce 450 gallons of clean water per hour. At that rate, the costs associated with digging a well and installing a treadle pump will be recovered within a month. ARI is planning this large project so that families no longer need to rely upon water tanking.
ARI has the capacity to drill and complete a minimum of three wells per week. We are partnering with a number of non-governmental agencies working in Haiti to select the sites where wells/boreholes are needed most. These agencies are sharing some of the costs for this construction, but your contribution would go a long way to ensure that as displaced families have access to clean water.
